I’m seeing triple-digit high temperatures in the near future for pretty much anyone reading this. So let’s get right to it: Some safety/common sense tips about running in extreme heat and humidity.
--For heaven’s sake, AVOID the middle of the day, when the sun is at its apex. Roughly speaking, between 10a and 5p should be verboten. Completely off limits. If that’s your only option? SKIP IT.
--Even though relative humidity is at its highest, early morning – before the sun gets high in the sky – is the best time to run in these conditions. Late afternoon/early evening has the advantage of less direct sunlight, but the air temperature and humidity levels still stay elevated.
--It’s obvious, but make sure you are hydrating! Water, obviously, but also electrolyte replacement is equally important. And eat lots of fruits and vegetables, many of which are naturally high in water content. Yes, you can “hydrate” by eating healthy!
Last tip?
--This too shall pass. This intense heat wave is only slated to last for about four days. And if you get through it? You’ll be better equipped when the next, inevitable heat wave comes this summer.
OK!
I’m going to the air conditioned YMCA.
